The department offers the opportunity to participate in its ongoing research activities to obtain the PhD degree. PhD students are required to show their ability to do resarch at a high standard. Assessment of the PhD-activities is based on the innovative and creative character of the work. PhD students are required to write at least five manuscripts that are or will be published (or accepted) in international peer reviewed journals, and present their work at international research meetings. The PhD program is completed by defending a thesis based on the publications and the underlying research activities. The program normally will take 4 year on a full time base or 5 year on a 0.8 fte base.

PhD research projects will be part of the research program of the department, which focusses mainly on digital radiology and on the diagnostic performance of radiographic systems related to the clinical requirements of dental care (see also Research Projects). The final decision on the research subject will be determined based on the interest of the student.

The department has advanced facilities for research,including

  • intra-oral x-ray equipment of different makes
  • several panoramic x-ray machines
  • various types of digital intra-oral sensors (CCD and storage plate)
  • micro-radiography equipment
  • routine and experimental dark-room facilities
  • optical bench and xyz/rotational stands
  • eye tracking equipment
  • dosimetry systems (ionisation chambers and TLD-based)
  • Windows and Unix based computers (networked)
  • access to HP-computing facilities
